Periodontology is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum diseases and the supporting structures of teeth (jawbone, periodontal ligament, and surrounding tissues). Periodontists can perform the following treatments:

  • Scaling and Root Planing: Removal of dental calculus (tartar) and plaque, which is a fundamental step in the treatment of gum diseases. Root planing helps control gum diseases by reducing the depth of the gum pockets.
  • Pocket Therapy: Treatment methods aimed at cleaning gum pockets and controlling infections.
  • Surgical Treatments: Surgical interventions may be necessary to clean and correct deep gum pockets. Gum grafts and bone grafts can also be performed in this context.
  • Gum Aesthetics: Aesthetic interventions such as correcting the gum line or the color of the gums fall under periodontology.
  • Post-Implant Treatment Care: Treatments aimed at maintaining the health of the gums and surrounding tissues after implant treatment to ensure the longevity of the implant.

Periodontology is important for maintaining oral health and the longevity of teeth. Additionally, research is conducted to understand and investigate the effects of periodontal diseases on general health.
